The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced Tuesday that weekend service will be suspended on the Fitchburg line from June through November to perform the first phase of construction of major improvements along the line.

Substitute busing will not be provided.

The projects will improve track, signals, bridges and stations on the line to reduce trip times and increase service reliability, according to the MBTA.

Normal weekend (Sunday) service will still operate on the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving weekends.

Weekend train service only will terminate in Fitchburg and originate at South Acton's station from June 1 to July 28 to allow work to be performed between South Acton and Fitchburg.

Weekend train service only will terminate in Fitchburg and originate at Brandeis/Roberts station in Waltham from Aug. 3 to Nov. 17 to allow work to be performed between Brandeis/Roberts and Fitchburg.
